Coral Reef Information System

Mapping Coral Reef Conditions

The Client: The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s (NOAA’s) Coral Reef Information System (CoRIS) collects data on the world’s coral reefs, 35 percent of which face extinction within the next four decades.

The Challenge: Despite occupying less than one-tenth of the world’s ocean surface, coral reefs provide a home for one-quarter of all marine species. These fragile ecosystems have an annual global economic value of about $375 billion. NOAA’s vast qualitative and quantitative data on coral reefs around the world was housed in several different data sets. This information needed to be aggregated in a single, centralized database to facilitate better analysis—ultimately leading to more effective conservation.

The Solution: In addition to creating a centralized database for Coral Reef data, KeyLogic, as a subcontractor, developed a Geographic Information System (GIS) interface—one of the earliest Internet-enabled GIS solutions in the U.S. Federal Government.

The Result: KeyLogic migrated the various data sets to a single database in such a way that they could “talk” with each other and spatially-enabled the data, plotting it on maps. Benefits included:

  • Improved Data Efficiency. Data consolidation makes it easier for NOAA to synthesize its own information, simply by making disparate data sets compatible and available from a single source.
  • Simplifying Complex Data. KeyLogic layered data on zoom-able, pan-able world maps, making it easier for scientists and conservationists to analyze potentially interrelated conditions and to monitor trends.
  • Improving Communications. The GIS interface that KeyLogic designed makes NOAA data accessible to a much wider community of interest— including researchers, marine-related industries, and students. Sharing information and working cooperatively can lead to better environmental solutions.
  • Building on a Trusted Partnership. Having worked with NOAA on multiple contracts, KeyLogic was able to quickly understand the organization’s needs and rapidly design and implement solutions.
