IV&V Tools

KeyLogic produced guidelines for two IV&V processes: test design validation and requirements analysis. The guidelines outline a well-defined process to catch any flaws early in the process.

Improving NASA Software Development

The Client: The National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) Independent Verification and Validation (IV&V) Facility, which focuses on offering required software services, including IV&V of critical software under development, systems engineering support, and software assurance research.

The Challenge: To improve NASA’s IV&V processes to eliminate bottlenecks, improve use of resources, and increase efficiency.

The Solution: As part of a joint venture, KeyLogic produced guidelines for two IV&V processes: test design validation and requirements analysis. The guidelines outline a well-defined process to catch any flaws early in the process. One example of the process improvements deployed: KeyLogic engineers designed a method to parse NASA’s requirements data—arriving in all different formats—into an Excel spreadsheet without needing a programmer to do the work.

The Result: KeyLogic analyzed NASA’s IV&V process to find ways to detect errors earlier in the design process, provide quicker turnarounds, more efficiently employ staff time, and save money. Results include:

  • Employing Industry Best Practices. KeyLogic engineers brought senior-level experience from deploying IV&V test design analysis at other locations, including for the information technology (IT) industry, to bring a broad and fresh perspective to NASA’s systems. We also provided NASA with a formal survey of industry standards.
  • Enhancing Safety. With human life at stake, safety is crucial to NASA’s IV&V processes—which check early and often that (1) the system is being built right, and (2) the right system is being built. The end result is a better product.
  • Improving Use of Staff Resources. With IV&V processes well-defined and documented, senior-level managers can focus on setting the course in a broader sense rather than leading each step of the way. In addition, the newly designed Requirements Document Parser significantly reduces programmer labor hours, saving money.
  • Providing Quicker Turnarounds. Streamlining the IV&V process, eliminating data logjams, and improving upon staff labor hour inefficiencies speeds up the software build process—safely, efficiently, and cost-effectively.
