Independent Verification & Validation

KeyLogic provides Independent Verification and Validation (IV&V) services and tools to help NASA catch any design flaws early on—to enhance safety and save time and money.

Helping NASA Reduce Mission Risk through IV&V

The Client: The National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) Office of Safety and Mission Assurance (OSMA) enhances the safety and success of NASA activities through the development, implementation, and oversight of Agency wide safety, reliability, maintainability, and quality assurance policies and procedures.

The Challenge: NASA is a prime example of an agency with no room for software design error. NASA requires early detection and identification of risk elements.

The Solution: Independent Verification and Validation (IV&V) is an effective technique for increasing the probability of software being delivered that meets requirements and is safe, within cost, and within schedule. KeyLogic has conducted IV&V on numerous missions that range from orbiters to landers to deep space explorers. We have also provided IV&V for the Orion mission, which is slated to replace the shuttle.

The Result: KeyLogic analyzes NASA’s software throughout the development process to ensure that each system does what it is intended to do, doesn’t do anything that it isn’t intended to do, and performs safely in degraded conditions. Results include:

  • Improved Safety. With human life at stake, safety is of utmost concern for NASA. IV&V improves safety by (1) verifying that the system is being built right, and (2) validating that the right system is being built.
  • Objectivity. As a third party providing Independent V&V of a software system, KeyLogic is separate from the organization building the system—providing increased objectivity.
  • Cost and Time Savings. The costs of dealing with a defect discovered during design analysis are much lower than the costs of dealing with a defect found during final testing. Performing IV&V throughout the life cycle saves NASA time and money by identifying issues early in the process.
  • Cooperative Solutions. Being independent does not make KeyLogic a disinterested party. We are passionate about reducing risk for NASA and partnering with the Agency over the long term. KeyLogic has been providing IV&V for NASA for more than six years. We understand the overall mission and work closely with NASA to arrive at cooperative solutions. On numerous occasions, NASA has formally recognized KeyLogic for technical excellence.
