Responsibility & Sustainability

Leading the Charge in Sustainability and Environmental Innovation

At KeyLogic LLC, sustainability is at the heart of everything we do. As a trusted partner of the National Energy Technology Laboratory (NETL), a reputable lab of the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) we are committed to shaping a sustainable future that aligns with federal goals. Our dedication to the environment is reflected in the innovative work we do as a partner with the National Energy Technology Laboratory (NETL), from the remediation of orphaned gas wells, environmental modeling of various carbon conversion technologies, chemicals, renewable natural gas, liquefied gas to pioneering research in subsurface technology and others.

Our Sustainability Mission

Sustainability is crucial to increasing the efficiency of DOE’s infrastructure, improving the lives of scientists and employees, enhancing performance for taxpayers, and supporting local communities. At KeyLogic, we share the DOE’s vision:

  • Our Vision: Federal leadership in sustainability and resilience by the DOE.

  • Our Mission: To proactively lead DOE’s sustainability efforts, collaborate with DOE programs, and promote the cost-effective use of resources while monitoring the effectiveness of sustainability programs and initiatives.

Mitigating our environmental impact

KeyLogic’s contribution to a Net Zero world goes far beyond that of most services companies. KeyLogic is an industry leading expert in GHG emissions and carbon dioxide (CO2) capture and storage. Our scientists and engineers support the National Technology Energy Laboratory in developing and managing programs to reduce emissions and capture CO2 from coal and natural gas energy plants and to sequester CO2 underground in spent oil wells. Our expert AI/ML data scientists model energy plants to increase efficiency. KeyLogic is also the primary developer for the Energy Information Administration’s National Energy Modeling System (NEMS). We are currently developing a new clean hydrogen module for NEMS. KeyLogic is also engaged in assessment of water use, developing the Water treatment Technoeconomic Assessment Platform (WaterTAP) for the DOE’s National Alliance for Water Innovation. All of these efforts have national impacts far beyond the possible contributions of KeyLogic as a company alone.

Greenhouse Gas Emissions and Reduction Goals

KeyLogic is devoted to developing effective solutions that are supportive of a sustainable future. Because of this we have completed their own company carbon footprint based on Scope 1 and 2 emissions. Scope 1 emissions estimate the emissions associated with the company’s direct combustion of fuels from their company buildings and vehicles while Scope 2 emissions estimate the emissions associated with purchased utilities like electricity and steam. Using the 2024 EPA Simplified Greenhouse Gas (GHG) Emissions Calculator, we estimated our company footprint based on electricity consumption and direct natural gas combustion.
For 2024, our total company footprint was about 70 metric tons of CO2eq, where our Scope 1 and 2 emissions were about 12.2 metric tons of CO2eq and 57.7 metric tons of CO2eq, respectively.

Innovation in Sustainability

KeyLogic’s partnership with the DOE and WAPA is centered on cutting-edge environmental projects that drive sustainability. A key part of our mission involves the remediation of orphaned gas wells, a critical issue for our nation’s environment. By utilizing advanced technologies, we are working to safely identify, assess, and remediate these wells to prevent future environmental risks.
Our subsurface research team, operating through the National Energy Technology Laboratory (NETL) in Morgantown, WV, and Pittsburgh, PA, is dedicated to environmental research and development. This team is at the forefront of understanding the long-term impacts of energy extraction and is actively developing solutions to mitigate environmental damage. We also  have work in environmental modelling of various carbon conversion technologies, chemicals, renewable natural gas, liquefied natural gas, and others.

Aligning with Energy.Gov's Sustainability Goals

As a technology-forward and thought-leading company, KeyLogic LLC is proud to align its goals with the Sustainability Performance Office of the U.S. Department of Energy. We continue to implement sustainable practices in all our contracts, advancing federal sustainability objectives. From resource conservation to reducing carbon footprints, we are making a measurable difference in the fight against climate change.
